VDL and Defence joining forces to scale up defence production in the Netherlands
Family-owned company VDL Groep to work with the Dutch Ministry of Defence and use capacity and facilities in Born (Limburg) and some other sites for defence production. This will enable innovative companies to scale up in the Netherlands. Minister Ruben Brekelmans and President & CEO Willem van der Leegte announced their collaboration today at VDL Groep in Eindhoven.
The security of the Netherlands and its allies depends on the rapid strengthening of the armed forces. The Ministry of Defence (Defence) needs more of everything: ranging from combat vehicles to drones and from traditional equipment to high-tech systems. The Netherlands needs to contribute more to military production as well. More certainty, shorter delivery times and less reliance on countries outside Europe are important too. So, Defence has called on companies to commit some of their capacity and facilities for the security of our country if possible.
Minister Brekelmans: "We are very grateful that VDL, a wonderful family-owned company, has come forward. I am delighted to be able to announce that Defence will now start to collaborate with VDL. This partnership will be the flagship of renewed collaboration between Defence and companies in the Netherlands."
Defence and many companies in the Netherlands have in-depth knowledge about specific equipment and weapon systems. For example, VDL has the expertise, capacity and infrastructure to produce high-quality products on a large scale. It can offer exactly what the armed forces need: a combination of quality and scale.
Support from Defence
Defence wants to assist VDL with the organisation of Defence production in various ways, starting at the site in Born. Firstly, it is exploring the option of leasing production facilities. Secondly, it could be involved in finding companies to work with VDL to scale up production. Finally, Defence could help bring together demand from various countries so that orders are large enough for production to start at VDL.
Win-win situation
The collaboration between Defence and VDL will improve security and also benefit economic growth. It will lead to the immediate creation of more jobs in Limburg and increase scope for innovation, which will result in further growth and development.
Brekelmans: "It’s a win-win situation in every respect. A win for Defence and a win for VDL. A win for our security and a win for our economy. This new flagship collaboration shows that Defence wants to work with companies more intensively. Our entrepreneurs, industry and knowledge institutions are essential to our safety and security, now and in the future."
Willem van der Leegte, President and CEO of VDL Groep, says: "Today’s uncertain geopolitical developments highlight the importance of a strong European - and Dutch - defence industry. Defence has called upon us to help and we are happy to do our bit. With more than 100 development and manufacturing companies in the group, we have the competencies necessary to scale up an industry: industrialisation, product development, automation and assembly. Added to this, our site in Born has the space necessary, power is not an issue and our employees have an extensive knowledge of high-quality assembly. Exactly what we will be doing? We will offer our support to Defence in any area where demand matches our competencies or the competencies of our partners."
